As a policy, I don’t repost others on Mere Inkling, but this is a worthy exception. It is a timely reminder of a unique study opportunity, and has a link to a fascinating essay about C.S. Lewis’ ideas for an angelic counterbalance to his Screwtape Letters.
I’d heard about Lewis’ concept for a response to his successful Screwtape Letters but never reach much about it. Fascinating.
You’re right. It a joy and a wonder to “discover” something that was never published.
Thank God for scholars who uncover edifying new material.
I must have attended Compline so many times: “Thine adversary as a roaring lion goeth about seeking whom he may devour, whom resist steadfast in faith”. C S Lewis may have toyed with the idea of a counter to the Screwtape Letters, but in truth he never needed to and was probably right to abandon the idea. His life and every other piece of his writing spoke to the argument against. And I am so thankful for that.
What a wonderful — and accurate — insight!
I think you are right that Lewis felt more of a burden on this point than was needed and that his work is always answering Screwtape: “The Weight of Glory”, The Last Battle, The Great Divorce….
And that very list includes several of my favorite books.
Thanks, Rob. It’s always good to dig a little deeper.
