Don’t like the subtle misogynistic undertones in Attenborough’s film ‘Shadowlands’. For example, when C S Lewis is waiting to meet Joy for the first time in a hotel café, a woman appears who looks similar to the real Joy Davidman but is not in keeping with Hollywood’s beauty standards. Then Debra Winger shows up and we are expected to exhale a collective sigh of relief. Winger was too young and too Hollywood pretty for the role. She acted well but why not go for authenticity and realism?

    1. You make an excellent point, Ness. Authenticity and historical accuracy is too precious to surrender.

As for the film… I agree with your suspicion that it was due here to Hollywood’s focus on externals. What drew Lewis and Joy to one another was not the physical, but the mental and spiritual (i.e. true) person. The emotional dimension grew as their love blossomed, as well.

Nice to have you “subscribing,” although I’m on a blogging hiatus while I work on some long-delayed projects. Welcome.
